This collaboration between contemporary dancer Alvin Collantes and sound artist Jun Suzuki explores emotional upheavals through a close interaction of body movements and sound improvisation, acting and reacting to one another in an intimate duet.
Based in Berlin, both artists combine diverse cultural backgrounds, from Canada to Israel, Japan to France, and as a result, the blending of cultures flows naturally through their work.
Together, they experiment beyond their respective boundaries to explore and stimulate the correlation between one another’s sensibilities and stage an intertwined dialogue between states of body and mind :
Mirroring emotions as fluids, continuous, variable and constantly shape-shifting.
Jun Suzuki is a French-Japanese artist and music producer currently based in Berlin. His recent work with immersive sound installation balances tongue-in-cheek and sinister meditations on human responsibility in environmental downfall. Jun’s work is hypnotic and rhythmic. With a background in classical music, his skill navigating the nexus between music and art is apparent.
Alvin Collantes is a Filipino-Canadian dance artist, certified Gaga teacher and photographer. He completed the Gaga Teacher’s Training Course in 2018 under the artistic direction of Bosmat Nossan with the generous support from the Ontario Arts Council’s Skills & Careers Development Grant for Artists of Colour and Canada Council for the Arts’ Career Development Grant. During the course, he participated in Gaga intensives and served as a guest at Batsheva Dance Company under the artistic mentorship of Ohad Naharin.
In this time of crisis, Alvin took the moment to share his story online through “Dose of Pleasure: Movement Meditation Sessions.” These sessions is a mixture of his healing modalities including gaga, meditation, shamanism, sound healing and rave culture. He believes in the power of groove, rather than escaping the body, we give in to the process of experiencing honest pleasure through the depths of understanding the pain that lives inside us. As we begin to recognize these blockages in the system, we cancel them by learning the beauty of what it means to let go into the vibration of the groove inside the music.
