FOR THE LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY // APRIL – JULY 2019
A 5-part documentary series exploring the art – and, at times, the danger – of photography, featuring legendary photographers who pioneered their own way in the field.
FILM #4 – Thurs 11. July
‘Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures’ (2010)
Directed by Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato, USA, 108mins, OV
Doors open: 18:00
Film starts: 19:00
The fourth film in our FOR THE LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY series explores the controversial giant of late 20th century photography. Mapplethorpe’s vast, provocative, and powerful body of work has established him as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.
“Look at the pictures, look at the pictures!”. With these words Senator Jesse Helms denounced the work of Robert Mapplethorpe in Congress. Twenty-five years on, the first full length documentary about the artist since his death does just that. An unrestricted examination of the life and work of Mapplethorpe, whose photographs pushed social boundaries with their frank depictions of nudity, sexuality and fetishism.
“I want to be a story, told at night in beds all over the world” – Robert Mapplethorpe
LOCATION: Factory Berlin Görlitzer Park
